[Revelation Ch.19: Second Coming of Christ]

III. Christ's Second Coming

The glorious return of Christ is one of the most joyful events in Bible prophecy. It is the most crucial in terms of fulfillment of end-time prophecies. His coming initiates the series of judgments on the Gentiles and Jews, inaugurates the kingdom on earth, and culminates the second phase of His promised coming as Messiah. This is the most dramatic moment of history!

REV 19:11-12  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True...His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns

The rider on the white horse is different from that in Revelation 6. The latter is the Antichrist; here it is Christ. Instead of riding on a lowly animal, Christ is revealed as on a white horse, coming as the triumphant and glorious King. He is crowned and comes with righteous indignation to judge the world.

REV 19:13  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

The reference could be of the Battle of Armaggedon, and resulting bloodshed, that was then raging on earth. It could also refer to Christ's shed blood on Calvary. His first coming as the suffering Messiah and his second coming as the glorious Messiah are events united in His person forever.

REV 19:14  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

These are the saints of all ages, as well as the angelic hosts. No army on earth has ever been garbed in white. The color of military uniforms are always that which would camouflage the soldier or could withstand dirt. However, Christ and His followers are not coming down to fight--but to reign.

REV 19:15  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations

The sharp sword out of Christ's mouth is, of course, figurative language. It is the "sword of the spirit," which is the Word of God (cf. Eph. 6:17). Only a word from Christ's mouth would slay the nations' armies arrayed against Him.
