[Revelation
Ch.18: Commercial Babylon]
I.
Commercial Vs. Ecclesiastical
We suggest that the commercial Babylon (literal city) in Revelation 18 is
different from the ecclesiastical Babylon (Roman church) in Revelation 17.
The following reasons are offered—
(1) Rev. 18:1 "After these things" denotes that chapter 17's
events are succeeded by that of chapter 18.
(2) The prophecy of Commercial Babylon is conveyed by "another
angel" (18:1). Throughout Revelation, different angels introduced
different judgments.
(3) Their titles are different:
Commercial Babylon is simply called "Babylon the Great"
Religious Babylon is called "Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother
of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth.""
(4) Religious Babylon is destroyed by the antichrist and his system
The destruction of Commercial Babylon is lamented
by kings and merchants of earth.
(5) Religious Babylon is destroyed so that antichrist can proclaim himself
god. Commercial Babylon is destroyed because of Christ's second
coming--"after these things" (19:1)
