[Revelation Ch.14: Heavenly Announcements]

V. The Harvest of Earth

The following scenes depict the forthcoming Battle of Armageddon and related events.

REV 14:15-16  And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come...And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth

An angel calls out to Christ to reap, because the earth is ripe. The word "ripe" has the idea of withered or overripe. The action is for judgment and punishment. Satan has been sowing tares during the age (Matt. 13:25), now comes the harvest. This harvest will include the wicked nations of Matthew 25:31-46.

REV 14:18-20  ...saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

...And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

Theses verses refer primarily to Israel, as Israel is repeatedly referred to under the figure of the vine (cf. Isa. 5:1-7; Jer. 2:21; Ezek. 15:6). And the winepress often symbolizes the time of Israel's greatest distress.

We are now at the climax of the Battle of Armageddon, which started in northern Israel. It now extends down to around Jerusalem ("without the city"), below the Dead Sea and into the Red Sea or Aqaba. The 1,600 furlongs are about 200 miles, or equivalent to the entire length of the Holy Land.
