[Revelation
Ch.12: The Dragon and the Woman]
I.
The Sun-Clad Woman
REV
12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed
with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of
twelve stars:
The Roman Catholic church identify this woman as Mary. It cited this
passage to prove the bodily assumption of Mary into heaven. And based on
this passage, the Spanish artist Murillo created his famous painting
"Mystery of the Immaculate Conception."
In answer, we note that the Virgin Mary was human and a sinner, like all
of us. In Luke 1:47, Mary called God "my Saviour." She was the human bearer of Christ and should be respected
and admired. However, she was
not divine and to be worshipped.
The best interpretation of this woman is ISRAEL, which gave birth to the
Messiah-Jesus. In Genesis 37, Joseph (son of Israel) dreamed that the sun,
moon, and the eleven stars made obeisance to him. And the dream was made
known to Jacob.
REV
12:2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and
pained to be delivered.
Jesus was born an Israelite. He identified Himself with the Jewish race,
which was then until Roman rule. His birth was attended by many painful
events, such as the taxation and far journeying, the search for a
birthplace, the lowly manger, and the antagonism of Herod.
