[Revelation Ch.9: The Trumpet Judgments (Cont'd)]

VI. The Fifth Trumpet

REV 9:1-2  And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit

The "star" here is most probably an angel, because he is described in with a masculine pronoun and is given the key to the bottomless pit. He possesses personality and will.

The bottomless pit is the home of the demons (Luke 8:31; Rev. 20:1). At the millennium, Satan would be bound in the pit.

REV 9:3-5  ...locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions...[to hurt] only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads...they should be tormented five months ...And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it

These are demon-possessed locusts. Unlike regular, these locusts do not eat green vegetation. They were programmed to torment mankind for five months. Like the herd of swine which went insane at the moment of their possession by demons (Matt. 8:32), these possessed insects would be used to hurt people.

For 5 months, there would be no funerals. People would be tormented night and day, almost to the point of death, but there would be no release from life in death.

REV 9:11  And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

This is apparently a special demonic angels, Satan's right- hand demon, assisting the devil in his works.  "Apollyon" means destroyer. Satan could deceive people under many guises, but here his real nature is relfected in these evil names.
