[Revelation
Ch.4: Worship in Heaven]
III.
The Twenty-four Elders
REV
4:4 And round about the throne were...four and twenty elders
sitting, clothed in white raiment
Two main identifications, equally strong, have been made on the 24 elders:
(1) Symbol of the Church
They represent the Christian believers. Here are Christians who are
crowned and on thrones--suitable to after the Judgement Seat of Christ
(NOTE: Angels would be judged and rewarded later at the Great White
Throne)
The number 24 is symbolic of the idea of representation. The priesthood
was represented by twenty-four orders of priests.
(2) Actual Angels
They are angels, like the cherubims and four living creatures around the
throne. In 5:9, they sung about redemption in the 3rd person
("men", "them") and thus seemingly precluded
themselves.
Since the sight of 24 elders in heaven occurs only here, and in related
passages, we do not have sufficient materials to definitely pinpoint their
identity.
