[Daniel Ch.10: Invisible World's Warfare]

I. The Heavenly Messenger (10:4-11)

DAN 10:1  In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia

Daniel was an old man, past 90.  Three years previously, Cyrus had allowed the Jews to return to Palestine.  Why Daniel did not return with them, we do not know.  Probably because of his advanced age and also his important position in the government kept him from returning.

DAN 10:2-5  In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks...

This was the exact 21 days of invisible conflicts between God's angelic messenger and the demonic Prince of Persia (cf.v.13). The fervent prayers of God's people on earth often affects the outcome of heavenly conflicts.

I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel...and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz

As the prophet was standing by the Tigris (Hiddekel) River, a "certain man" appeared.  He was dressed in linen and dazzled with brightness.  Who is this personage?

     (1) The Preincarnate Christ, because--

  • similarity with Christ's glorified appearance in Rev. 1:13-16

  • unusual reactions from Daniel and his friends in Dan. 10:7-8

  • natural for Christ to bring this final, significant prophecy

     (2) An Angelic Being, because--

  • inconceivable for Christ to be hindered by a demonic being (10:13)

  • Christ should not have needed the help of archangel Michael (10:13)

  • this person is described as "sent" to Daniel (v.11)
