[Daniel
Ch.9: The 70 Weeks Prophecy]
I.
Daniel Reads Jeremiah (9:1-2)
DAN
9:1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed
of the Medes
March\April 538 B.C. We are now in another kingdom period--the Persian empire.
DAN
9:2 I Daniel understood by books the number of the
years...[written by] Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish
seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
Daniel was reading Jeremiah 25:11-12, which predicted that the Babylonian
captivity would last only 70 years. That
is, the Jews would be coming back to Jerusalem after a certain number of
years.
"And
this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these
nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
"For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at
Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing
you to return to this place. (Jer. 25:11; 29:10)
According
to Jeremiah 25:1, the exile began in the 4th year of Jehoiakim or 605 B.C.
Therefore, mathematically, the exile would end at 536 B.C.
Thus, Daniel was probably shocked to realize that 68 years had already
passed, and there was only about 2-3 years' time before the end of the
Babylonian captivity.
