[Daniel
Ch.5: Belshazzar's Riotous Feast]
I.
The Godless Clown (5:1-4)
DAN
5:1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his
lords...Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the
temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and...drank in them.
It was not uncommon for ancient kings to prepare gigantic banquets. 10,000
guests were invited to the marriage feast of Alexander the Great. Persian
kings often have 15,000 guests in their daily banquets.
Nebuchadnezzar had at
least some respect for this temple vessels by placing them in his idol
temple (1:2). But this clown intentionally blasphemed the God of Israel by
using the Jerusalem temple vessels for riotous revelry. He was fully aware
of what he was doing (cf. 5:13).
Moreover,
at the time of the feast, Babylon was under siege by Persian armies. But
the king was unconcern and defiant.
